SUMMARY:Exhibition: A Life in Tapestry
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to present the first retrospective exhibition of William Jefferies鈥� woven tapestries\, illustrating the development of his unique visual language over five decades. It offers a rare insight into his creative process and sources of inspiration\, as well as his distinctive and virtuosic exploration of materials and the woven surface. There will be a programme of supporting events including workshops and guided walk throughs during the exhibition. Much of the work has not been shown before\, and many pieces will be for sale. \n\n\n\nAfter training with Archie Brennan\, Maureen Hodge\, and Fiona Hutchison at the Edinburgh College of Art Jefferies went on to work at the Dovecot tapestry studio\, and subsequently to complete an MA at the RCA. A dedicated teacher\, he led the Morley College Tapestry course for 18 years until retirement\, and he continues to run regular workshops at his studio in Kew. His work is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum\, the Crafts Council\, and the Scottish Craft Collection\, as well as in privately by both international and UK collectors.聽 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOpening Times:\n\n\n\nTuesday 鈥� Friday: 12:00 鈥� 5:00pm \n\n\n\nSaturday: 1:00 鈥� 5:00pm

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Morley Gallery for a special illustrated talk by artist and master weaver William Jefferies\, exploring the fascinating history and function of tapestry in architecture and interiors. Jefferies will examine how tapestry has long been used to project status or antiquity\, evoke domestic warmth\, communicate corporate or moral symbolism\, impart religious or moral teachings鈥攐r even create dramatic atmosphere in boardrooms and foyers. \n\n\n\nThis lecture runs alongside 鈥淎 Life in Tapestry\,鈥� the first retrospective exhibition of Jefferies鈥� woven work\, on show at Morley Gallery from 20 January to 7 February 2026. The exhibition offers a unique insight into over five decades of Jefferies鈥� creative evolution: his distinctive visual language\, his virtuosic exploration of material and woven surface\, and many seldom-shown pieces. \n\n\n\nAs with all Penny Lectures\, the event is free and open to all 鈥� a continuation of 非凡资源网鈥檚 long tradition of making art\, craft and learning accessible to the community. \n\n\n\nWhether you come as a curious member of the public\, a student of textiles\, or a lover of architecture and design 鈥� this lecture promises to deepen your appreciation of tapestry not just as decoration\, but as a powerful medium for storytelling\, ambience and identity. \n\n\n\nBiography 鈥� William Jefferies\n\n\n\nA master tapestry weaver with a distinctive and virtuosic visual language\, William Jefferies discovered tapestry at the Edinburgh School of Art\, where he immersed himself in the lively experimental scene centred around Archie Brennan\, studying also with聽 Maureen Hodge and Fiona Mathison. He spent five years there\, then eight months working at the Dovecot tapestry studio before moving on to an MA at the Royal College of Art. \n\n\n\n\nHis work became more widely known and in the 1980s and 90s was regularly part of exhibitions of contemporary British Tapestry staged by the Crafts Council and others. It has been exhibited all over the country\, from Edinburgh to London. The Morley exhibition 鈥楢 Life in Tapestry鈥� will be the most comprehensive display of his work to date\, and our first chance to see a lifetime of weaving in one place.
